About Maria Organic: Maria Organic takes an opposite approach of many present-day canneries; rather than relying on tradition and nostalgia to create their brand, they’re working to refurbish and modernize the idea of traditional canned foods to captivate new generations of tinned fish eaters. With innovative flavors and sustainable fishing practices, Maria Organic has created a richer flavored product that’s better for the environment.
Producer: José Gourmet
Proprietor: Adriano Ribeiro & Luís Mendonca
Where it's from: The Azores, Portugal
Species: Tuna
Why it’s unique: In an effort to stand out on shelves and differentiate themselves from other brands, Adriano and Luís collaborated with twelve of Portugal’s most well-known children’s illustrators to create the packaging, making the tins both recognizable to local, and captivating to tinned fish newbies. They’ve even worked with a renowned Portuguese chef to create a set of recipes for both adults and children to go with the tins.
Ingredients: Tuna, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, salt
How it tastes: The olive oil shines through giving the tuna a sweetly floral flavor. The tuna fillets are soft and tender.
How to use it: We’d make a Mediterranean style pasta salad using the oil from the can as a dressing, and flaking the tuna in with some arugula, olives, pine nuts and lemon.
What you get: One 4.2 oz (120g) tin
